Why Improv Training for Attorneys?
In the legal world, the difference between a good attorney and a great one often has nothing to do with knowledge of the law. It comes down to presence. The ability to think on your feet, read a room, adapt when a deposition goes sideways, and connect genuinely with a jury, a judge, or a client under pressure.
These are not innate talents. They are learnable skills — and improvisation is one of the most effective ways to develop them.
Change Through Play has been training legal professionals in Portland since 2020, helping attorneys, paralegals, and legal teams develop the communication and performance skills that matter most in practice. Our attorney training is the only CLE-accredited improv program approved by the Oregon State Bar.
What You'll Develop
Our attorney training program is built around the core skills that distinguish effective legal professionals:
Composure Under Pressure Improv trains you to stay grounded when things don't go as planned — a witness surprises you, opposing counsel pivots, the judge asks an unexpected question. You'll develop the mental flexibility to respond clearly and confidently rather than freeze or overreact.
Active Listening Most people listen to respond. Improv teaches you to listen to understand — catching not just the words but the intent, the hesitation, the subtext. This is a game-changing skill in depositions, client meetings, and cross-examination.
Client Communication & Relationship Building Clients don't just hire expertise — they hire trust. Our training develops the presence, warmth, and clarity that make clients feel genuinely heard and confident in your representation.
Courtroom Presence & Persuasion Body language, vocal delivery, pacing, eye contact — the physical elements of persuasion that law school doesn't teach. Improv training develops these skills through practice, not theory.
CLE Credit — Oregon State Bar Approved
Our bi-annual attorney workshops are fully accredited by the Oregon State Bar and count toward your Continuing Legal Education requirements. Each workshop provides CLE credit hours — giving you a genuinely useful, memorable training experience that also satisfies your professional development obligations.
Private in-house training for law firms is also available year-round, either at our SW Portland studio or at your firm's offices. Get in touch to discuss your team's needs.
“After taking this series, I felt more comfortable speaking, thinking on my feet, and staying present in the moment — things that can be so challenging for attorneys when we’re under pressure. I left feeling more confident and relaxed, and with great tools that I now use when presenting in court.”
